DAY TREATMENT - LEARNING CENTRE

This program involves a service alliance between Alberta Learning, Children & Family Services Authority Region 4, David Thompson Health Region - Children's Services and together with Chinook's Edge School District, Red Deer Public School District, Red Deer Catholic Regional Division and Parkland Youth Homes, a service approach to providing service to complex family needs in Red Deer and surrounding areas is accomplished within a collaborative model that represents mandates from all relevant systems.

The program purpose is to provide normalized treatment interventions for young people within a therapeutic learning milieu while addressing family functioning issues through a full range of possible supportive services. Young people and families that qualify for this program will fall within the mandate of at least two of the three ministries involved in this collaborative service model. The target age is between 12 and 16 years with individual exceptions considered on a case by case basis. These young people may have moderate to severe psychiatric symptoms and behaviours that may place them at high risk.

This Day Treatment Program contains a number of service components including:

1. School Program
  • Public School Board Teaching staff delivering school board curriculum.
  • Academic and behavioural assessment directs the development of an Individualized Program Plan that is coordinated with the treatment team.
  • A supportive environment focuses on strength development with realistic preparation for re-entry into the main stream school system.
2. Clinical Services
  • The classroom will be staffed with a Classroom Behaviour Specialist that has formal training and experience in the developmental needs of this population.
  • Clinical Therapists will provide a range of services for the students and families including:
  1. Psychological, educational, behavioural, occupational and family assessments.
  2. Individual, Group and Family Therapy
  3. Parenting Seminars & Support Groups
  4. In-Home Clinical Support
Admission to this program is affected through designated individuals within each of the identified partner's systems and reviewed by an Admission Committee to prioritize referrals. The intention is to make use of this program as a short - term, least intrusive and most inclusive intervention for young people and care providers to have satisfying and productive membership within their family and community.
